about

“Dark Tides” is a lyrical journey exploring deeply buried memories, exploring the nature of hidden pain and eventual healing. As Jasmine explains:

“Dark Tides is inspired by the Thames, a tidal river that is the heartbeat of my city. All things rise to the surface eventually, sometimes dark things, sometimes treasures, only to be hidden again if not brought to light. The first part of healing for me is the discovery that there even is pain, and how it manifests itself. It can be quite subtle.”

Adding an additional layer of mystery to the track’s intended meaning is Keane’s mastery of the cello, effortlessly weaving between Rodgers’ plaintive vocals. The deep hum of the wood evokes the sense of Victorian London, of repressed feelings, only to be released as the bow meets the strings. Rodgers spent much of lockdown walking along the Thames, and became enchanted by the finds of the mudlarkers, who regularly discover objects dating back to Roman times.

lyrics

It’s dark down there
The place where he lies
And the stories that he’s told you,
Would you ever know
Take the fire let it burn low

Can you trust a word he says?
It’s almost over
And the meaning of the moment
Will you recover
Take the fire let it burn low

Oh
Can you walk away
Can you let it go
Let it go let it go

And the magic of the moment
That you will turn to
And the meaning of the passion
That you laid bare to
Take the fire let it burn low
You who mean so much to so many
Now you’re at his mercy

Oh,
Can you walk away
Can you hide your face
Can you let it go
Let it go let it go

And it takes another passion
To restore you
And it takes more than action
To recover
Take the fire let it burn
